Cooling water contains hardness-forming compounds, e. g. calcium and magnesium ions. In case of thermal load and a high concentration ratio, the solubility product of the hardness-producing compounds concentrated in the cooling circuit is often exceeded. Due to this, calcium and magnesium carbonate precipitate. This scale shows a low heat transfer. Therefore, it has an inhibiting effect on the heat transfer and thus reduces the cooling capacity.  Evaluation of dynamic calcium carbonate scale inhibition is conducted in a test apparatus. A test water providing quite harsh conditions is used. Over a two-hour period, the test solution is pumped at a constant flow rate through a helical glass tube heated from outside by heated water of 80 °C (176 °F). The calcium carbonate precipitate formed inside the glass tube is removed with a defined quantity of hydrochloric acid, and the calcium level in the acidic solution is determined. Comparison against a blind sample provided the relative calcium carbonate inhibition of the tested compound.
